Descender Volume One- a sci-fi robot adventure for anyone!
It’s Time for a Sci-Fi Adventure! Who’s With Me?
I recently picked up the Image Comics trade paperback for Descender written by Jeff Lemire with art by Dustin Nguyen. They say you shouldn’t judge a book my it’s cover however the moon and stars with a young boy sets up a galactic adventure in my mind that I needed to find out more about.
The book begins with humans and robots living as one in a symbiotic relationship. The action starts immediately as we are met with massive robots called Harvesters that wreak havoc in the cosmos and destroy planets and lives. So much for cooperation…
Flash Forward 10 years and we meet a young companion robot called TIM-21. He awakes after 10 years to find he is the only one left on his planet, Population: 1. We flash back through his memories throughout the pages and become very connect to this robot. At the beginning of his time to see a familiar character Dr Quon. The heartfelt conversation about him being nothing but a robot designed to be a companion for young children pulls at the heart strings.
The book follows TIM-21 and his trusty pet, Bandit, plus a cast of other peculiar characters as they adventure through the galaxy with seemingly a common goal and bond.
Anyone see I, Robot? Descenders seems to have elements of that movie mixed with Star Wars bounty hunters and bandits that creates a fun sci-fi adventure for the reader.
Volume 1: Tin Stars ends in a twist that set me up to quickly want to get my hands on Volume 2. The guys have placed an order for me with a few extras in case you are intrigued after reading Volume 1 for yourself.
Out of 10 winks, I give this one 9.
Happy Reading and I’ll check back in after Volume 2!
