Justice League Dark- Horror and Action's Favorite Kid
Justice League Dark- Horror and Action's Favorite Kid
In the last year I had taken a break from Batman. This seemed unprecedented for a guy like me;
I had read Batman my whole life and loved it. This Batman fast was broken when James Tynion
IV started his run on the Caped Crusader. I had heard his name and was familiar with titles he
had worked on, but I had not read any of his work yet. This was a mistake I realized
immediately after his first issue on Batman, and to rectify this I grabbed as much as I could of
his run on Justice League Dark.
The realm of magic was always my favorite in DC, I had grown up on Swamp Thing and
Constantine, and loved when Zatanna or Doctor Fate would pop into an issue of something.
Tynion holds a solid grasp of what power magic holds in the DC universe, and how absolutely
terrifying it can be in a moment’s notice. This run has cemented Tynion as a truly great horror
writer when he is given the chance. His new characters in this run like the Upside-Down Man
are horrific in a way that is not familiar in the western comic medium. This horror is only further
ingrained in the mind of the reader thanks to the startling and shocking illustrations done by
Alvaro Martinez Bueno and Daniel Sampere. Both illustrators have beautiful and unique layouts
not readily found in superhero comics these days and add a layer of excitement for each page
turn.
This book is a godsend for DC fans of all types. Magic is explored and turned inside out with the
deepest and darkest expanse of characters that could possibly be assembled. With fan favorites
like Jason Blood, Deadman, Madam Xanadu, and so many more join an already stacked team of
some of the greatest magic wielders of the universe. Each page pops and shocks like a
firecracker in a living room, and leaves you wanting more from the shadowy corners of DC.
This book is ready to pick up at the shop in trade paperback and single issues. I highly
recommend this run, and I think it’s the best in this new era of DC comics. I’ll give the first arc
“The Last Age of Magic” a solid 9 out of 10 top hats.
-Jake
Wonder Woman. Swamp Thing. Zatanna. Man-Bat. Detective Chimp. Apart, they are a goddess, an elemental, a sorceress, a mad scientist and ... well, a chimpanzee detective. But together, they are a superhero team like no other--led by the Amazon Princess herself and assembled to fight threats bizarre, magical and dangerous.
They are the JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK ... and they're in trouble.
